Asim Abu Shaqra Book of Art
Asim Abu Shaqra has become a milestone in the history of Israeli and Palestinian art, after his death from cancer in 1990 before he had even turned 29. The image of the cactus is central to his oeuvre, Abu Shaqra made the connection between the cactus as a national icon sabra (symbol for tenacity) and his own experience. The artist felt his personal story mirrored that of the potted uprooted cactus as a Palestinian studying and living in Tel Aviv.
It was important for us to keep the relevance and liveliness of the originals, making the book act as the exhibition space. Abu Shaqra’s sketchbooks keep their spirit, represented in a smaller format of ‘a book within a book’. On the cover: silk screen printing and a special jacket that reveals the upper part of the book.
